Volcano erupts near Magnetic Island Queensland

Smoke plumes as a volcano erupts just off Magnetic Island
on Cape Cleveland just kilometres from Townsville in Tropical North Queensland

As the end of the world draws nigh on the 21st December 2012 a volcano erupted on Wednesday October 31, 2012 in North Queensland

As smoke plumed over Cape Cleveland, darkening the skies, a massive crowd of around eight people headed for the hills shouting and shrieking, "We're Doomed! It's the end of the world!"

However all is not lost, as one Magnetic Island local summed up this terrifying phenomena saying,

"It's not a volcano. It's just more smoke and mirror tactics from the Megalomaniac, the evil sheriff of Brisvegas Campbell Newman and his insanely rabid bureaucracies as they rip us off to subsidise his bid for the 2024 Olympic Games in Brisbane."

Queensland Dictator Campbell Newman shuts down Magnetic Island's only Disaster Recovery Centre - for money!

In an unprecedented cold blooded and callous move Dictator Newman, his storm troopers ignore the welfare and well-being of the voters who elected him.

Magnetic Island's only Cyclone relief and Recovery Centre will be closed & decommissioned on the 20 December 2012.

Dictator Newman's puppets, LNP MP John Hathaway and by association LNP David Crisafulli have totally ignored the calls of their constituents to represent them

Queensland no longer has representational government!

Democracy is dead!

You weren't elected to hurt and deprive our Kids Mr Newman! Don't Close Magnetic Island Camp

You weren't elected to hurt and deprive our Kids Mr Newman! Don't Close Magnetic Island Camp

  • Decommissioning is not an option.  Decommissioning the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre and  only designated Disaster Relief & Recovery Centre with no alternate facility available is not an option for this year’s cyclone/wet season. The Centre cannot be decommissioned. The decision to decommission the centre was made without consideration of regulatory guidelines
Premier Newman, Minister Dickson and Senior Bureaucrat Ashton got it wrong!

To ensure that the centre will continue to cater to the school visitor groups that traditionally makes up the major market segment and incoming revenue source and that the centre stays online as the island’s relief & recovery centre there are only two options. The first (1.) will not happen leaving the second (2.) as the only acceptable option

  1. The camp either stays open under government control to operate as it has and the cancelled bookings to be restored OR

  1. The Camp stays open under government management to operate as it has. The cancelled bookings are to be restored with the government continuing to manage the camp during a transitional operating period until  the private operator takes over after 1 July 2013 - Staffing during the transition period. As full time staff employed by the department of communities have been given the option of resign and recieve a redundancy package or be sacked and get nothing, and the casula employed by IPA being laid off the only option here could be to employ existing staff on a temporary basis. With the new operator making the decision for future staffing.

After the community Rally and consulation with over 50 user group leaders and numerous other stakeholders the general consenus can be summed in option 2.. And a large number adding  "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

Newman & Dickson Decommission Magnetic Island's Only Disaster Relief & Recovery Centre

It has become painfully obvious that the Newman government is paying lip service only to having the Magnetic Island Recreation Centre continue in its current roles. That is firstly as an Active recreation Centre for kids & other groups, and secondly, the most important priority at this time, as Magnetic Island's only designated disaster relief & recovery Centre.

There are no designated, public cyclone Shelters or places of refuge on the island.

The decommissioning of the Magnetic Island centre effectively place the lives and wellbeing of Magnetic Island residents and visitors at risk in the event of a disaster such as cyclone or severe flooding.

The Magnetic island facility is the only one that has the capacity to provide a temporary home for residents homeless as a result of a disaster. It sleeps 100 but has the capacity to sustain at least another 50. The kitchen can cater for 200 or more. There are 6 other Emergency facilities on Magnetic Island, these are evacuation centres only, but there is only one capable of sustaining families in the event of a disaster and the post period.

Recreation Minister Steve Dickson’s callous statement in the Townsville Bulletin Monday 12 November has made the government's position quite clear. He "could not guarantee the facility would be in a usable condition during a cyclone" And that designation of disaster recovery centres was the responsibility of the Townsville City Council.

Minister, the 'designation of disaster recovery centres' may be the responsibility of the Townsville City Council but, Mr Dickson, how can the Council 'designate' a facility when the only suitable property on the island  is being closed and decommissioned?

The state government has no right to place the well being of Magnetic Islands Residents and visitors at risk. Cyclone season is upon us, We may or may not have a devastating cyclone or flood situation but it is the government’s duty of care to ensure that this facility remains  on standby. Not to decommission it. If the worst happens we will hold the state government responsible.

Locals pitch protest to save rec centre - Save magnetic Island Camp

 EMMA CHANNON  |  November 19th, 2012

ABOUT 60 Magnetic Island residents rallied at the Active Recreation Centre in a move of "people power" yesterday, to try to keep the centre's doors open.

Led by local identity David "Crusty" Herron, the group gathered to try to send a message to the State Government, summed up on the placards that were waved about: "Save our camp".

Former state member for Townsville Mike Reynolds, who helped save the centre in 2008 when then-premier Anna Bligh threatened its closure, said "people power" would save it again.

Mount Isa Council joins fight to save the Magnetic Island Camp

Council joins fight to save camp spot Save
By By Kim Waters
Nov. 15, 2012, midnight

MOUNT Isa's leaders will fight a state government decision to close the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre, saying the camp closure was detrimental for kids in the North West.

At yesterday's Mount Isa City Council meeting mayor Tony McGrady carried a motion for council to support the Spinifex Parents and Citizens Association in their push for a reversal of the state government decision.

Cr McGrady said council would also write to other schools in the region, requesting their support.

He said the Magnetic Island camp was often the first chance for Mount Isa kids to experience the surf and sand.

"Education is about reading, writing and arithmetic, but it's also about personal development," Cr McGrady said...

John Hathaway MP LNP Responds to Closing Picnic Bay Recreation Centre

The Magnetic Times somehow manged to do what a lot of others could not. The inimitable and persistent Editor George obtained a response from John Hathaway MP LNP on the impending closure of the Picnic Bay Recreation Centre. Check out the article... http://www.magnetictimes.com.au/article-4076.html

In the response to the Magnetic Times Mr Hathaway states
"Whilst the decision to permanently close the recreation centre has not been made, our government must look at all options. We are open to expressions of interest from operators who may be able to invest in the recreation centre in order to reduce the government's overall expenditure."

Sounds clear and above board but... it's somewhat ambiguous.
  • the camp may or may not be closed
  • the government is considering options
  • the government is open to expressions of interest for investment in the site
Does this mean that there is a hidden agenda? Does Campbell Newman and his cohorts have some preferred LNP supporting developers lurking in the background?

Magnetic Island Recreation Camp Closed Permanently to be Sold Off by Fuhrer Campbell Newman

Magnetic Island Recreation Camp at Picnic bay is now officially closed. LNP Queensland Fuhrer Campbell Newman has decreed that our newly renovated camp is to be sold off to the highest bidder.

Over 30 school and other groups already booked will now be denied economically viable access to Magnetic island.

Our camp is an integral component of our tourism infrastructure. The island depends on tourism for it's viability. Times are hard, visitor numbers are down. The Camp must be reopened. It must not be sold off like the rest of Queensland.

Magnetic Island Paperbark Trees under attack! Aliens? Terrorists? Vandals?

Breaking News! Magnetic Island's Paperbark trees are under attack!
Aliens? Terrorists? Vandals?
No one knows by what! Or Why?
Do you?

Across Magnetic Island mysterious holes are appearing in the trunks of selected Melaleucas, paperbarks or Tea Trees. These holes are all found around 3-5metres above ground.

If you have any idea as to what is making these holes and why let us know. It's driving us nuts!!!

Best of Magnetic Car Hire has joined C:Drive Car Rentals illegally storing vehicles in the Nelly Bay Terminal Car Park

Best of Magnetic Car Hire has joined C:Drive Car Rentals illegally storing hire vehicles in Magnetic Island's  Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal Car Park.

According to a Mr Trevor Brownrigg, an annual visitor to Magnetic Island, C:Drive Are back! Up to 6+ rental cars are again being stored daily by C:Drive in the Nelly Bay Terminal Car Park.

To further exacerbate the parking problems 'Best of Magnetic' are storing their rental cars in the parking spaces allocated to the IGA for 2 hour parking and in some spaces shared by the Department of Transport and the IGA

What sort of immunity from regulatory retribution has been granted to these companies by the Qld Department of Transport? Fair enough, Best of Magnetic now has a shopfront on the carpark. If they want allocated vehicle storage (parking) let them do what PRD had to do, pay for the spaces and have DOT signage erected!

The van with the signage for the Arcadia based $30 car rental mob, along with 5 private cars and utes are now abandoned, unregistered vehicles. What a great welcome to the island. Again I ask,

when will the transport department pull it's head out of the sand and their fingers out of their fundamental orifices and do something about our parking woes? Probably Never!!!

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman touts Magnetic Island to host Australia's next Olympic Games!

Oops! That should read, "Queensland Premier Campbell Newman touts Brisbane as Australia's next Olympic Games host city, but not yet" Not Magnetic Island. Forgive us here at farcebook.

So the truth is out! the News Limited site (14 Aug 2012) exposes the focus of LNP Premier Campbell Newman push to rob us blind. He wants our gold to get Olympic gold - for Brisbane.

Premier Campbell Newman wants Olympic Gold

It seems that Premier Campbell Newman, Queensland's version of the wicked evil Sheriff of Nottingham, is intent on frittering away, in 2012 dollars, A$3 billion of public consumption resources, your money, that  have to be redirected from elsewhere. Just to give the south east corner of Queensland a bit of PR with a momentary cash flow for Brisbane & the Gold Coast. Goodness knows how much inflation, CPI and the continuing mismanagement of  Queensland's economic basis will add to the costs between now and then.

The income from the Sydney games was US$1.765 Billion around A$2 billion.

Well what's in it for us, the true Queenslanders? Let's look at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the impact on the NSW economy.

In 2002, the Auditor-General of New South Wales reported that the Sydney Games cost A$6.6 billion, with a net cost to the public between A$1.7 and A$2.4 billion.
It has been estimated that the economic impact of the 2000 Olympics was that A$2.1 billion has been shaved from public consumption. Economic growth was not stimulated to a net benefit and in the years after 2000, foreign tourism to NSW grew by less than tourism to Australia as a whole. A "multiplier" effect on broader economic development is not realised as a simple "multiplier" analysis fails to capture is that resources have to be redirected from elsewhere: the building of a stadium is at the expense of other public works such as extensions to hospitals. Building sporting venues does not add to the aggregate stock of productive capital in the years following the Games: "Equestrian centres, softball compounds and man-made rapids are not particularly useful beyond their immediate function."In the years after the games, infrastructure issues have been of growing concern to citizens, especially those in the western suburbs of Sydney. Proposed rail links to Sydney's west have been estimated to cost in the same order of magnitude as the public expenditure on the games. Sources Auditor-General’s Report to Parliament 2002 Volume Two , Wikipedia
"Ok", you say, we really didn't need all those thousands of public servants and others. Fine, perhaps we didn't need them. (consider this; Are the majority of the sacked people workers or management?) But as far as the evil sheriff Campbell Newman is concerned the federal government will have to bear the brunt of the cost of supporting 10s thousands of unemployed. Not Queensland. Hullo!

Whose taxes, fees charges pay for Social Security? One could bet it won't be a 'sheriff' politician or some incompetent bureaucracies management.

And why should your natural resources, government owned corporations and  infrastructure be sold off? To fix the blackhole from the previous government! you say. Rubbish.

Using cost of the Sydney games as basis allowing for inflation and CPI projections the estimated bill just for hosting the games may well be in excess of A$9 billion.

Of this estimated A$9 billion the allocation of funds from the public purse, your money, with inflation and CPI could well be A$4 - $6 billion. for the future South East Queensland Olympics.

How much will the SE corner of Queensland expect to make from the games? It had better be better than the  income from the Sydney games of US$1.765 Billion around A$2 billion for Sydney's investment of A$6.6billion.

So we ask the evil Sheriff of Nottingham (really Brisbane)

Why fill one financial black hole to create another?

Why should we pay for you and your LNP whimsies?

Go for gold Premier but don't use ours to get it!

You and your LNP government are no better that those who went before.

When you finish the 'have nots', the battler will be worse off.

Campbell Newman. You're Sacked! It's the 'Golden Rule'

Campbell Newman. You're Sacked! It's the 'Golden Rule'.

Wishful thinking.

Whether Newman and his cohorts believe in the Golden Rule is debatable. There is no way we can sack them. The actions of the 'Can Do' Team clearly states that they know as voters we have to wait 3years or so to have our say - at the ballot box. Meanwhile, one could be forgiven for assuming that, in regard to democratic government in Queensland, the LNP ethos is this;

"Let us just say, We believe that we, the LNP as a democratic government
should always Bite the hand that feeds us!

And that if the battler, the voters who put us in power, don't like it?

Tough! They don't realise how hard it is to ensure that,

 "-the iron ungodly hand of
class distinction has settled surely down upon Australian
society--Australia's democracy is only a tradition of the past."
Miles Franklin, My Brilliant Career

They should feel sorry for us. We, the Qld LNP MPs are Queenslanders too, battlers like them, who share the same burdens they have to bear. Burdens like, job insecurity, low wages, and salaries, skyrocketing prices, a bureaucracy gone mad, having our resources and infrastructure sold or ripped off, our natural environment raped and pillaged and diminishing help for the sick and disabled. It's not our fault. We are the good guys!
The voters just have to accept that we know what is best for Queensland - class distinction - Us and them. It is the only way to make our form of democracy viable for the top end of town and thereby get our economy back on it's feet and keep us, the LNP, in power."

Megalomania - The Quintessential Characteristic of a Democratic Premier

What is the Quintessential Characteristic of a 'Democratic' Premier as currently demonstrated in Queensland?

Premier Campbell Newman

Premier Campbell Newman
A truly ethical politician exemplifying his and his party's commitment to democratic government

The South African publication Business Day suggests that,
'Megalomaniacs abound in politics/medicine/finance- experts say disproportionate numbers of pathological narcissists are at work in the most influential reaches of society such as medicine, finance and politics'

'Megalomania is a psycho-pathological condition characterized by delusional fantasies of power, relevance, or omnipotence. 'Megalomania is characterized by an inflated sense of self-esteem and overestimation by persons of their powers and beliefs''.
 I. B. Weiner/W. E. Craighead, The Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology: Vol III (2010) p. 977

'The megalomaniac differs from the narcissist by the fact that he wishes to be powerful rather than charming, and seeks to be feared rather than loved. To this type belong many lunatics and most of the *great men of history.'
Bertrand Russell

Based on performance so far one could be forgiven for thinking that Queensland's latest megalomaniac is a diabolical reincarnation of the evil Sheriff of Nottingham (Brisvegas).

Magnetic Island's Picnic Bay Jetty Update. Good & Bad News

Good news & bad news for  *fisher folk & friends of  Magnetic Island's historical, local heritage Picnic Bay Jetty.

The good news is the restoration work is proceeding as well as it can under the circumstances. Hopefully it will be completed in October. This year that is, 2012.

Three critical pylons should be in place in a few days which will enable some serious work to commence on the jetty head. Sub contractors, Pacific Marine Group are carrying out this phase of the work already have one pylon in place.

That's the good news. The bad news is this, the over zealous rules & regulations imposed on the workers & the environs of the workplace by do-gooders, bleeding hearts, senior bureaucrats covering their asses and the politicians who sign off on these over-kill r&r are costing a fortune and delaying the work.

We are not suggesting that workplace health & safety matters be ignored but what we are suggesting is that the people who impose the regulations are out of touch with reality. We are aware of some of the details but we won't go into it here, now.

On the upside, the restoration crew are good blokes who take pride in their work and best of all have become an accepted part of our community.

You will notice, in the above image, that Australia, the big island off the coast of the mainland ie; Magnetic Island, is no longer in sight. A local identity reckons that "under the cover of the night and day long fog, some one cut the island loose and made Maggie a 2000 odd hectare refugee boat headed for some obscure shangrila seeking political asylum. - just to escape the whimsies of state and federal governments gone mad."

Again a special thanks to all those tourism & community groups and individuals who have worked so hard to have our jetty restored.

*fisher folk - an exceedingly politically correct term for the generic term 'Fishermen' which we hope pleases JCU Adjunct Associate Professor Betty McLellan.

Carbon Tax - Roast Lamb & Carbonara. A Magnetic Islander Perspective.

When it comes to dodging the carbon tax a Magnetic Islander has a suggestion that might help. It's about, Roast Lamb & Carbonara, If one could follow the logic?

"A friend asked me how I could afford to buy lunch on the first day of the Carbon Tax. "That's simple. I had roast lamb. I didn't order carbonara. I'm not stupid!" I replied in jest. But I would be really stupid to believe that the tax will not cause the prices of life's basic necessities to go out of control. And even more stupid if one believes that, "If elected", the opposition will repeal the tax. It's always the little people who pay in the end."
The farcebook-team suggest that you read & compare some ALP & LNP  thoughts on the impact of the Carbon Tax in The Little Book of Abbott Absurdities
